AI chatbots and voice agents have gone from novelty to normal. They answer questions, qualify leads and book appointments around the clock. But pricing is confusing, because you usually pay for setup and for usage. Here's how it breaks down.
The ranges below are typical market ranges for small and mid-sized businesses in 2026. They're a guide, not our price list.
The three ways to get one
| Option | Setup (USD) | Monthly (USD) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-the-shelf chatbot tool | $0–$500 | $30–$300 | Simple FAQs on your website |
| Configured AI agent on a platform | $1,500–$7,500 | $100–$1,000 + usage | Booking, lead capture, CRM and calendar connections |
| Fully custom AI agent | $10,000–$50,000+ | Hosting + usage | Unique workflows, many channels, sensitive data |
Usage costs explained
- Chatbots pay the AI model per message or token. For most small businesses that's a few cents per conversation.
- Voice agents usually charge per minute, combining phone, speech recognition, the AI model and the voice. Expect roughly $0.10–$0.30 per minute depending on the stack.
- Phone numbers and SMS add small monthly and per-message fees.
What drives the setup price
- Knowledge: how many services, policies and FAQs the agent needs to learn.
- Actions: answering questions is simple. Booking, taking payments or updating a CRM takes more work.
- Channels: website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, SMS and phone each need connecting.
- Handoffs: clear rules for when a person takes over.
- Testing: a good agent is tested against hundreds of real questions before launch.
Working out the return
Start with what a missed lead costs you. If you miss five calls a week after hours and one in five would have become a $500 customer, that's around $2,000 a month walking away. An agent that answers every call and books even part of that usually pays for itself quickly. Our Automation Savings Calculator helps you estimate the time saved on repetitive questions as well.
Red flags when buying
- No way to see transcripts of what the AI said
- No human handoff, so customers get stuck
- The vendor owns your data and conversation history
- Prices that hide per-minute or per-message fees
