How to write meta tags that get clicks

Your title and description are your ad in the search results. They don't just help Google understand the page, they convince people to click. Lead with the main keyword, make a clear promise, and give a reason to choose you.

Open Graph and Twitter Cards

When someone shares your link on WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook or X, Open Graph tags decide the image, title and summary people see. A strong 1200 × 630 image can dramatically improve shares and clicks.

Canonical URLs

The canonical tag tells search engines which version of a page is the original. Use it to avoid duplicate content issues from URL parameters, tracking codes or near-identical pages.

FAQs

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are snippets of HTML in a page's <head> that tell search engines and social networks what the page is about, how to display it, and whether to index it.

How long should a meta title be?

Aim for 50 to 60 characters. Google truncates titles wider than roughly 600 pixels, so shorter titles are safer.

How long should a meta description be?

Between 120 and 160 characters works well. Google may rewrite it, but a clear, compelling description improves click-through rate.

Do meta keywords still matter?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for years. It's included here only for other platforms that may still read it.
